The first ever Chess Olympiad in Tamil Nadu

Chess has always been constrained as an indoor sport and played for time pass. India has a keen affection towards chess and it takes part in many chess competitions outside the country. The chess stalwart from India, Vishwanathan Anand who hails from Tamil Nadu has contributed largely in this game. Earlier he participated in many world record chess games and even won few of them. One of his most interesting games was that where he even attempted to play against a robot. Anand is popularly known as the grandmaster of chess due to his exceptional skills in the game.

A talk about beginning a Chess Olympiad in India was started recently and Vishwanathan Anand was the chief ambassador of the Olympiad. An auction bid was conducted and Mahabalipuram in Tamil Nadu was finalized as the location of the Olympiad.Β  The Olympiad began on 28th of July and will continue over till 10th of August. A lot of winners and participants from over the world are present. This is one of a kind and it’s even more special as it is in Tamil Nadu said Anand in an interview.

It is the 44th edition of the Chess Olympiad. This is the first time it is conducted in India.

Response in Tamil Nadu

Tamil Nadu has now become a host state for the Chess Olympiad. PM Narendra Modi and CM M K Stalin, applauded India’s first ever Chess Olympiad. A formal inauguration was held on the 28th of July amidst the prime minister and the chief minister of the state. The grandmaster is the host of the entire tournament. As part of promotions for the games, popular director Vignesh Shivan collaborated with M K Stalin and A R Rahman for a music video. A popular destination in Chennai known as Napier bridge was painted like a chess board to celebrate the Olympiad. On the other hand, online trends such as chess board sarees are doing the rounds.

This is the next step in the advancement of sports in the country. India is looking forward to host many more such events.
