Demolition drive against Welfare Party Leader; suspected of orchestrating protests against the anti-prophet remarks

On Sunday 11th evening Prayagraj Development Authorities (PDA) demolished the residence of Javed Mohammad, the local leader of the Welfare party and a resident of JK Ashiana Colony of Old Prayagraj. In connection with the violent riots on June tenth , he was alleged by the UP police to be one of the masterminds of the protests against the remarks of Prophet by the former BJP spokesperson. โ€œMastermind Javed Mohd detained, there could be more masterminds. The anti-social elements used minor kids to hurl stones at the police and administration. A case registered under 29 crucial sections. Action will be taken under Gangster Act and the NSA,” Prayagraj Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Ajay Kumar told reporters.

Father of prominent student leader of JNU , Afreen Fatima who is also the national secretary of Fraternity Movement student wing of Welfare party, allegedly helped Javed as a co-conspirator of the riots said the UP police. PDA had sent a notice to the family warning to demolish the โ€œillegally constructedโ€ property and was asked to vacate before the scheduled demolition. Friday night 10th of June Javed was asked to come to the Police station for questioning and later he was arrested for unknown charges.

Course of the event

Over midnight, the police detained Afreenโ€™s mother and sister at the Civil Lines Mahila Police station without any warrant. On June 11 Afreen sent a letter as an appeal to the National Commission of Women mentioning safety concerns regarding her father. Afreen Fatima said to the Maktoob media that she is concerned about her parents who are both diabetic and her teenage sister. Two JCB bulldozers reached Mohammadโ€™s residence in the afternoon of June 12. The bulldozers, after taking down the front and the back gates, took out personal belongings from inside the house and dumped them onto an empty plot next to Fatimaโ€™s residence, reported The Wire. Suchithra Vijayan of the Polis Project tweets,

Lawyers of the politician claimed in a letter to the Chief Justice arguing that the house was registered under the name of Parveen Fatima, wife of Javed Mohammad. The notice that the PDA issued is againstJaved but the property does not belong to him. โ€œAny attempt by the District ,Police authorities and the Development Authority to demolish the house will be against the basic principal of law and a great injustice to the wife and children of Javed Mohdโ€Reciepts issued by civic authorities showed that House No. 39C/2A/1 is in the name of Parveen Fatima and the house owner has been paying water bills and house taxes in the last 20 years,  there are no dues, according to Maktoob Media. โ€œWhy were they even accepting our taxes if it was an unlawful house?โ€asks Afreen.

The Effect

Over 300 people have been arrested between June 10 and 11 across several cities of Uttar Pradesh associated with the protests that involved stone pelting, torching of vehicles and subsequent lathi charge. Those who were arrested also include All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen district president Shah Alam, Left leader Ashish Mittal, and anti-CAA activist Zeshan Rehamni.

The demolition drive politics is part of the humiliation muslims face in this hindu nationalism ideology, BJP supporters view it as a โ€œpunishmentโ€ for anti CAA protests or any kind of protests as a matter of fact. Itโ€™s the blatant violation of Constitutional securalism and basic human rights of people. The stark contrast between the behavior of police authorities when it comes to dealing with RSS protests with swords and open calls to genocide and the protest for dignity of the minorities of India is too evident to ignore.
